DescriptionOpening production of the American Ibsen Theater's third season. 110 minutes. Mix of modern and 19th-century elements. The stylistic idea is to heighten and shape the text with gestures and motifs from horror films. The theater is turned inside-out; the audience sits on the stage, looking toward the actors on the forestage and beyond them to the bank of empty seats. On the set are statues of the five characters – their ghosts, or the externals by which we often judge others? The statues' placement implies a great deal about relationships, and soon they seem additional actors as characteres move them, assault them and sometimes talk to them in preference to their human counterparts.
