Gespenster |
Description | Gespenster" is inspired by Ibsen's characters and milieu, yet it deviates significantly from its source material. The librettist Malin Kjelsrud describes that the Opera originally was intended as an adaptation of "Gjengangere" for a German audience, translation rights challenges prompted a creative pivot. With every rewrite, the opera veered further from Ibsen's vision. Enhanced by the additional reflection time the pandemic provided, the narrative has evolved to focus on the repercussions of a tumultuous marriage and unrealized love, resulting in a deeply psychological portrayal of a mother-son relationship marred by the mother's mental and physical maltreatment since the son's youth. While an earlier version culminated in a tragic suicide pact, the latest rendition sees Osvald rejecting his doomed fate, casting aside the lethal pills. As the February 2024 premiere looms and more revisions remain possible, those expecting a traditional Ibsen rendition might find themselves taken aback. |
