Notes | Teater Garasi is a multi-disciplinary performance collective, based in Yogyakarta-Indonesia, that explores and devises many possibilities in performing arts creation as part of an attempt to read, unveil, and understand changes happening in our ever transforming-world. Teater Garasi is a 2013 Prince Claus Laureate, awarded, among other things, “for their adventurous spirit and groundbreaking work in stimulating performance arts in South East Asia.” Established in 1993, Teater Garasi was built on the belief, and the practices, of performing arts as a way to process and produce knowledge and to dialectically involve with the social political environment. Such vision and practice, since the 2000s, have brought Teater Garasi’s works and artists into international performing arts circuit (Singapore, Berlin, Tokyo, Shizuoka, Osaka, New York, Amsterdam). Garasi Performance Institute is an initiative of the collective (Teater Garasi), which aims to create and encourage a sustainable creative environment for performing artists in Indonesia and Asia by means of knowledge sharing and dissemination, performance production and laboratory, archiving and publishing, and artist-in-residence programs. As an initiative, Garasi Performance Institute is an attempt to expand and institutionalize Teater Garasi’s years of experiences on knowledge production and collective creation. The Knowledge Sharing and Dissemination Program consists of trainings, workshops, publication, and public discussions, aimed at contributing to Indonesia’s performing arts knowledge infrastructure. Performing Arts Production and Laboratory Program facilitates performing arts research and creation of Teater Garasi’s resident artists as well as other young artists. The Internship and Artis-in-Residence Program, is an open space managed by Teater Garasi Foundation for young artists to have a firsthand experience with Teater Garasi’s works, or to have a residency time to immerse themselves in Yogyakarta’s society and art communities. Institutionally Teater Garasi’s management has cooperated and been supported by Open Society Foundations (2001-2002), Cultural Program of the Royal Netherlands Embassy (2007-2008), Hivos (2002-2015) and Ford Foundation (2017 -…). | ||
