DescriptionMy Master Builder puts an intriguing contemporary twist on the classic play by Henrik Ibsen. The original story centres on Halvard Solness, a successful architect in small-town Norway, who is visited by a young woman, Hilda, claiming to have met (and been propositioned by) him some years previously. Halvard and his wife Aline are also grieving after losing their twin son. Halvard grows closer to Hilda while working on his ambitious new family home. Despite his fear of heights, she convinces him to climb the building’s tall steeple at the public opening, which ends in disaster. This new version by Lila Raicek has its world premiere at the Wyndham’s Theatre in London’s West End. It is set in the glamorous Hamptons in contemporary America on the Fourth of July. Aline has become Elena, a publishing magnate, throwing a party for her architect husband, now Henry. But the arrival of his former student, Mathilde, leads to a great reckoning. This must-see updating of the play emphasises contemporary concerns around power dynamics in relationships.
