DescriptionHenrik Ibsen, the great master of Norwegian drama, wrote the play "The Lady from the Sea" in 1888, and it is considered one of his lightest plays. The initial impulse of the story comes from the Scandinavian ballad "Agneta and the Sailor", where a woman meets a man who lives in the sea and then abandons her family and children. Ibsen's play is about Ellida, the daughter of a lighthouse keeper who grew up by the sea and is married to Dr. Wangel, a doctor in a small resort town. Ellida is also a stepmother to her husband's daughters, who are soon reaching adulthood. Ellida is tormented by longing for the open sea and cannot accept the small town life. Although dr. Wangel's first wife is dead, she too stands between her family and Ellida. Then one day a man from Ellida's past comes from the sea and this changes everything. Both Ellida herself and her loved ones are faced with important choices.
