Event Gengangere

DescriptionGhosts was published in 1881, but even today several of the themes in the play are considered controversial. Marriage, divorce, the relationship between mother and son, double standards related to gender and sexuality, class and generational conflict, but also mental health, venereal diseases and mercy killings. Different interpretations can also point in the direction of prostitution and possible incest. The play pokes at the debate about what shapes us, whether it is heredity or environment that determines who we become. It is about duty and social morality set against freedom and joy of life. All of this is touched upon during the day and a half that the play unfolds. In other words, it is a violently condensed and intense drama we are dealing with.
